So...
After hearing all about James Cameron's newest film, I'll admit, I started off as pretty pessimistic.
Though my pessimism is understandable as we've over saturated the movie industry with 3D, 3D and yet more 3D to the point 3D is no longer special and different like it once was during the days of Reboot and Toy Story just about a decade ago or more.
Then came James Cameron, coming back from roughly a decade-long slumber and seeing the movie industry in the rocks with overused ideas, cliches, excessive explosions and pointless action scenes that had audiences groaning rather than keeping them intrigued.
Seeing this movie basically proved to me whatever James Cameron touches turns to gold.
He has yet to make a box office bomb in his directing career.
I'm well-aware of most of the complaints regarding the movie was that it was basically Ferngully and Dances with Wolves.
To be honest? Yes, it pretty much was.
However, let me further answer this question with another question: when was the last time we had a movie like that, and done right for that matter?
The movies from what we've been having as far as I could tell, were divided by these categories: snuff "horror" films, mindless violent "action" movies, hit and miss "comedies", cheesy "romance" or a combination of the above.
We haven't had a decent movie in a long while that delved into character development and made it the prime basis of the movie. Eventually, you'll likely start caring about these characters and actually believe they are who they are because they're not as one-dimensional as we expect them to be in most other stories the relied mainly on the plot.
However, this doesn't mean the plot wasn't good. As I already mentioned, Avatar was likened to Ferngully and Dances with Wolves. However, the differences between Avatar and the above two movies was it didn't have numerous, pointless cheesy song and dance routines with a painfully obvious message in the end...as well as instead of historical fiction, it was science fiction.
Further avoiding spoilers, I enjoyed the environments and how much thought was put into the characters and creature design. Their customs, language and atmosphere really drew me in and made me believe it was possible to find a world such as this.
I also enjoyed the native alien tribes, the Na'Vi were fascinating and I noticed they were pretty much inspired by Native American and African tribes combined.
The overall outcome of the story was nicely done and had a good pace to help you easily understand what was going on on both sides of the races, human and Na'Vi.
I also read around how it was dialog-heavy...which is also true, but like with any story from a book or an RPG-genre game, is necessary to know more about the plot, the characters' thoughts and their character development.
You're a bitch if you complain there's not enough action and it had too much dialog, because frankly, you're not listening to the story. The climax at the end had my heart racing, so at the very least your patience pays off.
I honestly can't see a sequel to this being made, it's perfect as it already was and shouldn't be touched.
What also added to the experience was the 3D as well, though unless you've trained yourself to watch a lot of 3D stuff (videogames, other movies), I don't really recommend the further eyestrain.
Also, at the risk of raising a few eyebrows from friends and family who I've linked to this review from Facebook, I will say this:
The Na'Vi were kinda hot.
That is all.
Happy New Year.
